2010 Spring Webinar series

Our mission at the Atlantic Canada Clinical Engineering Society (ACCES) is to support clinical engineering professionals working in the Atlantic Provinces and developing educational opportunities is central to that mission.  As you know, continuous education and professional development is key to our profession and helps us foster the adoption of new and innovated technologies in healthcare.

The Atlantic Canada Clinical Engineering Society (ACCES) is pleased tooffer an aggressive spring Webinar series of six presentations.  Each presentation is approximately one hour.

System requirements to attend webinar:

  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer, Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or newer (JavaScript and Java enabled)
  • Window 2000, XP, 2003 Server or Vista
  • Cable modem, DSL or better internet connection
  • Minimum of Pentium class 1GHz with 512 MB of RAM (Recommended) (2GB of RAM for Windows Vista)

Modern anesthesia carestations are the result of an evolution and revolution in anesthesia engineering and clinical functionality.  Understanding the history of anesthesia equipment will provide you with an excellent background into today's systems.  Anesthetists focus on the proper delivery and management of anesthetics - inhaled and intravenous - to safely maintain the proper level of anesthesia.  This presentation will review the basics of anesthesia pharmacology.  Maintaining the patients' airway is an important part of all anesthetics.  Several methods can be used, from minimally invasive to endotracheal intubation, which allow for management of the airway and ventilation.

Monitoring of the patient under anesthesia has evolved from basic blood pressure analysis to invasive hemodynamics and neuromonitoring.  We will review the basic functionality of current monitoring systems and the physiologic information behind the numbers.

  • History of Anesthesia Equipment
  • Anesthesia Pharmacology
  • Airway Management

This webinar will outline how medical devices are regulated in Canada under the Medical Devices Regulations.  Special emphasis will be placed on problem reporting and in particular, the role of hospitals and biomedical engineering staff.  Topics will include:

  • Overview of the Medical Devices Regulations
  • classification of medical devices
  • device licensing
  • Establishment licensing & required procedures (Complaint handling, Recalls etc.)
  • regulation of imported versus domestic devices
  • mandatory and voluntary problem reporting (how the process works)
  • the key role of hospitals, device users and the biomedical engineering staff

Anesthesia carestations are complicated life-support systems with significant interactions between the components.  In this presentation we break down the anesthesia system into four major components, Vaporizers, Ventilators, Gas Regulation and Flow Control, and the Breathing System, to better understand the function of each component.  In addition we will focus on the interaction between the components.  Each component has a unique function, but id dependent upon the others for proper function.

The modes of ventilation in anesthesia have expanded significantly to meet the increasing acuity of surgical patients.  Critical care modes of ventilation, such as Pressure Control, SIMV, Pressure Support and Pressure Control - Volume Guarantee, are now available in current anesthesia carestations.  These modes allow for ventilation of patients who may have previously required a critical care-type ventilator in the Operating Room.  Understanding the compliance and resistance of the patients' respiratory system, the interaction between the ventilator and the patient, and the ventilator's response to the patients' inspiratory effort allow will enhance your knowledge of the carestation functionality.
